Motivation

One of the most difficult aspects of “working at home” is you have to be self motivated. There is nobody breathing down your neck making sure you meet the deadline.

So, can you relate to this scenario:

Today’s task is to update my home page on my website. This needs to be finished and published by 6.00pm

So the implementation(or lack of it) goes something like this:

Get home page in edit mode on screen.

Stare at screen for inspiration – none comes.

Check email.

Go back to home page and stare at it some more.

Play a game of Spider Solitaire. If you play the 4 suite version it does take a long time!

Go back to home page and stare at it some more.

Take dog for a walk.

Go back to home page and stare at it some more.

Check email again.

Go back to home page and stare at it some more.

It is now 6.00pm and time for a cocktail – task incomplete, actually not even started!!

What can we do to improve this situation?

I think if you want to update a page you probably need to start from scratch – looking at an existing page may not bring you inspiration to improve it. Get a new page open and try to list some pointers/subjects you think might be relevant. These won’t be easy to come by at the drop of a hat, so make sure you have something to make a note on when inspiration comes. This might happen when you are walking the dog, so make sure you have the facility to note it e.g. on a smartphone or even the old fashioned way, pencil and paper. Then sit down and write some content about the notes you have made. At least that gets you started.

Remember motivation is very very difficult………….but not impossible.
