Performance Based Marketing

Performance based marketing, as the name suggests is a type of marketing where you get rewarded for achieving targeted results.

In affiliate marketing the reward comes in the form of a commission on something sold by one third party to another third party where you are the “introducer”.

I believe this to be an extension of the old “management by objectives” Many years ago when I was a salesman for Esso in the UK every year we had to identify what sales of what product we were going to sell in our sales area. Of course we were encouraged to concentrate our efforts on the more profitable product lines but in the end we, ourselves had to sign off on the definitive sales for the forthcoming year.

We were then rewarded accordingly when we achieved those sales in the form of salary increases and bonuses.

The definitive objective in affiliate marketing is a bit more tenuous. This is because before you can earn a commission you have to get someone to your website and subsequently buy something.

The biggest area of difficulty is getting someone to your website. To a large extent this is very much dependent on SEO or Search Engine Optimization.

So yes performance is rewarded but the key to success is getting the content of your website such that it will get recognised by search engines.

Does that mean that producing the right sort of content is an art or science.
